Team History

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington Club Hockey Team was formed by Colin Rossi, Ian Aldrich, Pete Schwarz and Blake Cute with the opening of the Wilmington Ice House in October of 2004.

The first season (05-06) saw the Seahawks roster only 12 skaters and a 1-9 record in the BRHC with their first victory coming against Christopher Newport University. The following season (06-07) would see the Seahawks increase their roster to 17 skaters and a respectable 6-13 record for the strength of teams played. Captain Blake Cute was honored as a member of the 'all-BRHC Second team' on defense.

The 2007-2008 season saw the break-out of the UNCW Club Ice Hockey program with a record number of skaters coming out to try-outs in early September at 28. The team struggled through the first half of the season and at the winter break, a change was needed.  Walker Coady was hired to step in behind the bench and bring the team to the next level. After five consecutive wins it was clear, Coach Coady was making headway with the Seahawks. Lead by senior captain Blake Cute and fellow graduating seniors; Colin Rossi, Ian Aldrich, Tim Haggerty, Todd Nixon and Pete Schwarz, the team would dominate and finish the BRHC season with a 10-1 record and a 8-0-1 record during the spring schedule. (The only loss coming in a shoot-out to D2 UNC Chapel-Hill.) Clinching the teams first BRHC South Division Championship and their first playoff berth, the Seahawks looked poised to capture their first BRHC Championship on home ice. The road to the championship saw the Seahawks winning over Radford University, 4-1,  for right to face Old Dominion University for the BRHC Championship. In one of the best games played all year, UNCW and ODU traded goal after goal, right down to the final seconds, but it was ODU who would win, 8-7. UNCW in only its third season, reached the championship game and is already favored to win next year with the departure of ODU to the Colonial Division of the BRHC.

Senior goalie Pete Schwarz received the 'all-BRHC Goalie of the year' award,  with sophomore Matt Huestis receiving  the  'all-BRHC second team' at forward and Coach Coady was runner-up BRHC coach of the year.

League Info

The team competes in the Carolina Division of the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference against UNC-Charlotte, The Citadel, Appalachian State and North Carolina State D3. In the Virginia Division, they complete against George Mason, Radford University, Virginia Military Institute William and Mary, Lynchburg College and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Seahawks also compete against Colonial Division opponents; Old Dominion University, Christopher Newport University, University of Richmond, Salisbury University and arch-rival East Carolina. The Seahawks also compete annually against ACCHL D2 opponent UNC Chapel-Hill and Clemson University.

The UNCW Club Ice Hockey team has seen tremendous growth in its short 3 year history and looks to increase the exposure of ice hockey in the south east coastal region. The team has increased its schedule from 10 games during the first season to a 23 competitive schedule, against fellow BRHC teams as well as area schools.

Stay tuned and follow the action as the Seahawks continue to make waves in the South East hockey area.
