Summer Update
The
2008-2009 hockey season is just around the corner and the Seahawks will
face their toughest schedule ever. The UNCW Club Ice Hockey team
comes off a remarkable second half under Coach Coady that saw the team go
10-1 in the BRHC Carolina Division (13-8-0-1 overall) and come within a
goal of a BRHC Championship. Despite losing five seniors, the
Seahawks return 21 solid players and look to add several more as school
resumes. UNCW will face a higher number of quality teams as the team seeks
a bid for the remaining spot in the newly formed Select Division of the
BRHC. All the teams outside the regular BRHC schedule are nationally
ranked within the top 15. (UNCW was 16th last season)
UNCW will
open the season with the second annual Teal/White scrimmage and skills
challenge on September 26th. This will be a great chance to see the
Seahawks in action and is free to the public. UNCW Hockey T-shirts and
game jerseys will be given out to attendees.
The
Seahawks will be on the road for the first four games as the team will
travel to Hillsborough, NC to face off against ACCHL D2 UNC Chapel-Hill
and Duke University. UNCW lost to UNC Chapel-Hill 5-4 in a trilling
overtime shoot-out last season. It will be the first time the
Seahawks face off against ACCHL powerhouse Duke University.
The team will then travel to Greenville, SC to renew the rivalry with
Clemson University. Clemson has been playing with an independent status
since leaving the BRHC two seasons ago being ranked in the top 12
consistently since then.
Finally
returning home, the Seahawks will have their home opener weekend against
BRHC member UNC-Charlotte. Last season the Seahawks beat the 49ers 7-2 and
6-5. Halloween weekend will see the team traveling to Charlotte, NC for
the second annual Charlotte Shootout Tournament. The three day tournament
will see the Seahawks against new faces in MTSU, Florida and Florida
Tech.
The team
will then return home to face off against Washington & Lee University and
N.C. State D3. Washington & Lee recently joined the BRHC and will be a
solid opponent for the Seahawks. UNCW went 2-1 against the Wolfpack last
season. To close out the fall semester, UNCW will make the long road
trip to Delaware to face off against Salisbury University. Salisbury
recently joined the BRHC and were awarded with a spot in the Select
Division having been ranked 15th last season.
Kicking
off the spring semester will see the Seahawks face their arch-rivals ECU
in a home and home series. Friday night UNCW will travel to Greenville to
face the Pirates in the always hard Bladz on Ice and then return to
Wilmington for Saturday afternoon's game. UNCW will enjoy a four game home
stand against Appalachian State and Citadel University before heading on
the road once again to face off against NC State D3 and UNC-Charlotte.
UNCW split the series last season with the Mountaineers and will face
Citadel for the first time.
The
Seahawks will close out the regular season against CNU, who swept the
series last season and will have a chance for revenge against ODU in
Chesapeake, VA . ODU and UNCW battled three times last season with
UNCW winning 8-7 and ODU winning 6-5. In the BRHC Championship game both
teams battled back and forth with ODU edging out UNCW 8-7 to win their
first ever BRHC Championship.
The dates
and location of the BRHC Championship Tournament will be announced
shortly.
